MOTHER: Ellen Madison, 48, Waitress
STEPFATHER: Daniel Carthy, 50, Engineer
SIBLINGS: Isabel Carthy, 4, Student
HISTORY: Hattie may have been a rape baby, but her mother loved her. Ellen, who was 26 when she was cornered outside the restauarant where she worked, welcomed the baby. She was lonely; she had moved away from her family in search of independence, only to find that it didn't suit her well. Hattie became Ellen's new family, and Ellen was happy until Hattie shifted for the first time. Ellen didn't know what to do, because she knew society wouldn't welcome her little girl. So she kept Hattie hidden away at home, locked in her little apartment. Life wasn't terrible; Hattie loved her mother, and Ellen was an attentive mother who invented little games to keep her child happy. She would hide little presents for Hattie in her pockets and in her purse, and Hattie could only get her candies and cheap pieces of jewelry if she manage to steal them without looking.
Even when Hattie turned eighteen, she didn't know she was missing anything. The only life she knew was in the apartment with her mother. But things changed for Hattie when Ellen met Daniel Carthy and married him, despite the teenage girl hidden away, because she was pregnant and she couldn't let another child grow up without a father. Daniel was supportive enough, in theory, but the reality of Hattie scared him. Neither Hattie nor Ellen distinguished between Hattie's two forms; Hattie could go to dinner as a hyena as far as Ellen cared. Daniel couldn't understand Hattie's innocence and childishness, and Hattie couldn't understand why her mother had picked this man over her. Hattie was used to having Ellen all to herself, and Daniel wrecked the equilibrium of Hattie's life. She took it for four years, watching Isabel, her half sister, grow up with the love of two parents. Hattie herself was regulated to the sidelines of the family, and her jealousy over Ellen's time was a constant irritant for everyone. When Hattie turned twenty two, she took the leap and ventured outside, in search of someone who could love her more than her mother, or, at the very least, be interesting.
TREMBLING HANDS PLAY MY HEART,
like a drum, but the beat's lost in the show.[/b][/size]
LIKES: shiny things, interesting people, greasy food
DISLIKES: boredom, sleeping on concrete, enchiladas
HOPES: to surround herself with interesting people, to someday wear expensive jewelry, to have a safe place to sleep at night
FEARS: meeting her father, getting caught stealing, being ignored
A SECRET?: Hattie knows who her biological father is; a respected member of one of the city's gangs.
PERSONALITY: Though she is, by all appearances, an adult, Hattie has a rather childish mind. She is naïve to the ways of the world, and in some ways can be considered very gullible, though she does have a strong survival instinct when presented with a life threatening situation. This is because Hattie tends to take most people at face value, and has not yet learned the meaning of deception. However, this does not mean that Hattie believes everyone kind to her is her friend; Hattie herself can be very picky about who she spends her time with. She tries to only socialize with people who impress her, appear interesting, and have jewelry that she can steal. In a nutshell, Hattie is a kleptomaniac who can never keep her hands off of anything shiny. She hoards most of what she steals, and will steal from both distant strangers and close friends.
However, she is very protective of those that she considers to be her friends. Because of this, Hattie can easily be considered violent, though she only attacks others when she believes they are somehow harming someone she knows. Hattie will not move to protect someone she doesn’t care about. However, Hattie is defensive of her friends to the point of stalking them and trying to limit their contact with other people. She easily becomes jealous when someone she knows spends time with others. Hattie is very loyal, and will not easily abandon someone she believes she befriended, even if they betray her.
Hattie is not actually a kind person. If she perceives someone to be less than her and below her notice, she will either ignore them or use them for her own ends; which usually consist of stealing them blind. Hattie prefers to befriend those she respects, and because of this usually ends up as the least powerful person in any given relationship. She will not hesitate to make herself seem more valuable in the eyes of her friends. In this way, Hattie can be considered subservient.
